The Rajah Quilt a talky by Sarah Ashford
180 convict women, 20 wannabe stitchers, 24 hanks of cotton thread, 100 needles, 2 pounds of patchwork pieces, 1 quilt instructor, 1 captain and 1 ship.
That’s how the incredible voyage from Woolwich in London to Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania) began, way back in 1841. By the end of the journey, there’s a true romance, 20 quilters, 1 finished quilt, and hope for a new and better life on the other side of the world.
Join me, as I weave facts with your imagination. I’m going to tell you the incredible true story of the Rajah Quilt, the only known transportation quilt that still exists today.
Sarah is a quilt and sewing pattern designer, author, and educator with a passion for inspiring beginners. Her work has appeared in leading publications like Love Patchwork & Quilting, Today’s Quilter, and Make Modern. She has taught workshops across the UK, New York, and online. Jan McFarlan – Back Stories
You’ve put a lot of effort into the front of your quilt, so why not add a special touch to the back? Imagine the surprise and delight when someone turns it over! Adding a playful, meaningful, or even an inside message can bring a smile to anyone’s face. Every quilt has a story to tell, so let’s continue that story on the back. I’ll share some ideas for your own quilt backs and also tell the back stories behind some of my quilts.
Jan McFarland’s journey with fabric began in childhood. She first learned to embroider tea towels and pillowcases, and soon after she was making doll clothes, her own garments, and experimenting with piecing in home-economics class. After a career as a software analyst in the oil industry, Jan just wanted to maketwo quilts* using cherished scraps of vintage fabrics. However, in 1988 she discovered a true passion for quilting. Living in Houston gave her the opportunity to attend the world’s largest quilt show every year, further fueling her enthusiasm for the craft.
Over the years and through the creation of many quilts, Jan realized that the back of a quilt could also serve as a canvas for creativity. She began adding her own unique touches to the backs of her quilts, turning them into special works of art in their own right.
*She has yet to finish that second quilt!

Cups of Courage
What is Cups of Courage?
Cups of Courage is a community art fundraiser for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
We’re inviting quilters, makers, artists, and creatives to donate a decorated bra or breast cancer-inspired artwork—such as a mini quilt, textile piece, mixed media artwork, or other creative project.
All donated pieces will be displayed and sold throughout October 2026 at Lot 6 Art Bar in Tulsa, with proceeds supporting breast cancer research. Lot 6 will host a special reception for the launch of the exhibition on Fri 2nd October from 5pm
Whether you are a breast cancer survivor, have been impacted by breast cancer, or simply want to use your creativity to support an important cause, we’d love for you to be part of this meaningful community installation.
Our August Guild meeting will be a special show-and-tell celebration, giving participants the opportunity to share their creations and the stories behind them before they are displayed in October.
